另外,在许多大陆网友的文章中,都犯了一个明显的错误,就是把失踪人数和在战俘营里死亡的人数也加入美军阵亡人数中,例如,曾看过有人说“美军死亡人数是 54246+8177+2701”(其中的8,177人是失踪,2,701人是在战俘营中死亡)。事实上这是重复计算。不论是54,246也好,还是 36,576也好,都已经包括了失踪和被俘后假设已经死亡的数字,他们不只是“作战中失踪”(missing in action),而是“作战中失踪且假设已死亡”,其家属领阵亡人员津贴都已经领了几十年了。当然也有家属不相信自己亲人死亡,认为可能还在北韩或西伯利亚某地活着,不过这都跟统计无关。
战区意外死亡的人数会多一些,这是难免的。有兴趣的,不妨看看 James Brady 的 The Coldest War 第24章最後几节,他谈到上山死人、严寒死人、连春暖解冻也死人。掩体上面沙袋吸了过多解冻雪水垮下来活埋、土石流山崩整个掩体从山边掉下去、後方预备队地区夜间演习踩到地雷、同僚手枪走火、紧急战备有人从车上摔下被碾死,.....。
